Why refinish your vintage watch dial ? The main reason for refinishing or restoring your vintage watch dial is that over the years of service a watch dial will deteriorate due to moisture getting into the watch case. The second reason is many watch dials are silver plated and will tarnish over years of exposure to sunlight and air that enters the watch.
The dial is protected by a thin coat of lacquer when it is finished at the factory. This coating is quite fragile and will yellow with age as well as begin to deteriorate allowing for chemical reaction between the plating or painting and the substrate which is usually brass. For those of you that have ever had brass objects such as brass candle sticks, beds, etc. you will be familiar with the rapid tarnishing and frequent pitting of their surface. Watch dials are similar in this respect. They take a longer time to show the effects of age because they have a covering lacquer over the plating or painting but after time and exposure they will show the signs of aging.
Many collector's believe that a watch should be kept original including the dial, but in the present time and due to the popularity of watch collecting there is a lack of availability of pristine vintage watches and it has become necessary to restore watches that have suffered the rigors of time and the elements. We believe that watch dial restoration / refinishing is becoming an accepted practice just the same as restoring your vintage car to it's original beauty why not your favorite vintage watch.
